Osborn "Oz" Elliott (1924-2008)

The Board of Directors and Staff of Citizens Committee for New York City are deeply saddened at the loss of our beloved founder, Oz Elliott.

Born and raised in the city he cherished, Oz spent his professional life as a crusading journalist, and in public service. With Senator Jacob Javits, he founded Citizens Committee for New York City in 1975, which has provided millions of dollars in grants to thousands of neighborhood and community groups throughout the nation's largest city.

As editor-in-chief of Newsweek from 1961-1976, he was responsible for calling attention to the most crucial social issues of our time, including the role of women and of African-Americans in American society. He served as dean of the School of Journalism at Columbia, and as deputy mayor under Mayor Beame.

The board and staff revered him and will miss him terribly. In addition, he will be remembered by the many New Yorkers, mostly in the city's poorest neighborhoods, whose community groups and organizations are supported by Citizens Committee for New York City.

The family of Osborn Elliott welcomes donations made in his memory to Citizens Committee for New York City.
